Geosphere Engineering

  • Nippon Koei is... moving mountains

The geosphere is the solid earth - the continental and oceanic crust and the Earth's interior. Ultimately mankind is totally dependent upon the geosphere: we grow our food in it, obtain water from it, extract minerals and energy from it, and put our buildings and infrastructure in it and on it. We are also at its mercy, as it can release powerful forces in the form of earthquakes, volcanoes, geysers and more. Nippon Koei has a talented team of geologists and earth science engineers who fully understand the geosphere and who are dedicated to providing the highest possible standard of excellence in geosphere engineering.

  • Groundwater investigations and development

We provide complete services for investigating, analyzing, and utilizing groundwater resources. We assess the quantity and quality of groundwater reserves and consider their capacity to form the basis of a secure and sustainable water supply for rural communities and farmers. We undertake thorough demand analysis, determine sustainable groundwater extraction rates, and assess actual or potential degradation of groundwater from seawater intrusion or contaminants. In recent years we have undertaken a comprehensive regional groundwater study for the Central Highlands of Vietnam and a rural groundwater-based water supply investigation and planning for the Nusa Tenggara region of Indonesia. We will also be assisting with the implementation of the water supply systems in Nusa Tenggara, including not only structural aspects, but also extensive community and institutional preparedness activities.

  • Natural disaster planning & management

Seismic activity and volcanoes are among the most dramatic and serious natural hazards we face in living on planet Earth. Less conspicuous, but locally very important, are the processes involved in the slow and steady wearing away of the Earth's surface. Landslides, mudflows, and coastal wasting can claim infrastructure and lives at sometimes catastrophic scales. At Nippon Koei we utilize our in-depth geological expertise to undertake all facets of disaster analysis, planning, and management. We make use of the latest technology to assess natural conditions and model disaster scenarios. We determine interactions with the existing or proposed built environment and propose engineering and planning solutions. We recently undertook a comprehensive planning study and earthquake disaster response plan for Kathmandu, one of the most seismically vulnerable cities in the world. We also developed a road disaster management system for trunk roads in mountainous parts of Malaysia. This Slope Information Management System is a custom GIS application for systematic information collection and road management.

  • Geological investigation

We undertake all forms of conventional geological investigation. We employ core drilling and seismic surveys to assess foundation conditions for dams, tunnels, caverns, roads, airports, ports-in fact any building at all. Whatever your need, we'll move mountains to meet it.
