History of "nation building" from prewar period
The origins of Nippon Koei can be traced back to the achievements of Yutaka Kubota and his peers in promoting large-scale power development projects in the Korean peninsula before 1945. A group of engineers led by Yutaka Kubota worked on a hydroelectric power project on the Yalu River that flows along the border between North Korea and China. Through their involvement in numerous electric power development projects, related railway construction and water transport projects, including Supung power plant, known at the time as one of the world's largest dams, they contributed to the growth of economic activities and nation building from the Korean peninsula to northeastern China.
